So the latest series of The Block is halfway through. Next it will be House Rules and the other dozen or so other reality home improvement shows inundating our screens. Now don’t get me wrong I LOVE these programmes — reality TV at its best. I love that you can get some really great design ideas, hear comments and tips from the judges about what works and doesn’t work in a room and I can see what new and exciting products are currently trending in the marketplace. I especially love that we as viewers can discover designers and artists that we wouldn’t normally hear about.
After watching a few episodes of The Block I’m thinking to myself, how hard could be it? Like really, let’s be honest, they make it look so easy. I’ve got everything I need…
… and I am well on my way to designing my first room. What a lot of us don’t realise is preparation is the key to a successful renovation. Most of us don’t realise the research and groundwork professional designers actually do prior to creating a look for a room.
I’m looking at changing the look and feel of only one room. I won’t be painting or doing anything drastic like demolishing walls — that’s just too over the top for me. I don’t want to start off with a big project and find myself getting overwhelmed because the work is too much to do on my own.
I’m going to keep it simple so I’ve decided to work on one of the bedrooms and eventually I’ll look at doing something more challenging like the kitchen, lounge or dining room. I currently rent and luckily the walls are neutral which gives me a blank canvas to work with.
How I use the space and how I want it to feel will determine my theme and colour scheme. As much as I would LOVE to put an amazing gold framed mirror in the room, it simply wouldn’t work with the beautiful Scandinavian bed and bedside tables.
I’ve decided to do some research and Pinterest is a great place to start. Create a Pinterest account if you don’t have already one, start a mood board and start pinning paint colours, cushions, throw rugs, art work, furniture and fittings. Once you have an idea of what style you’re after you can start shopping.
And if all of this is just too overwhelming or you simply don’t have time, check out our online and let us take charge of your design and decoration project with you.
